Dollar Academy - a view from Barbados
Two Barbadian students at Dollar Academy talk about the school.
Dollar Academy
Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for almost 200 years. Today, the school has 1250 pupils aged 5 – 18, of whom approximately 80 are boarders. The school’s extensive campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 40 minutes.
The school prides itself on its outstanding achievements in many areas: academic, sporting and cultural. Expectations are high and pupils flourish in a supportive environment of enthusiasm, commitment, ambition and enjoyment. Firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach, and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of Academy life.
Balance is central to the school’s ethos, and pupils work hard in the classroom, strive for success on the sports field and take part in a rich variety of other activities. Creativity and innovation are encouraged in every area, and pupils flourish under the guidance of inspiring subject specialists. First class facilities and opportunities ensure that the interests of all pupils can be encouraged and developed – over sixty pupils currently in the Academy have represented their country in international competition.
The key to the success of Dollar’s boarding lies not only in the excellent facilities of each House, but in the particular approach taken to caring for pupils on campus. Boarders enjoy living in a community of friends, secure in the high levels of care offered by staff and viewed as members of an extended family in a home-from-home situation. While a number of boarders are from families with a Scottish connection, many others come from countries in mainland Europe, USA, The Middle East, Nigeria and the Caribbean.
